I have been dwelling over this post for months, deciding the best red lip shade for Christmas is a tough call in my eyes. The term ‘best’ is a tough term to live up to, not to mention that red lipstick were practically invented for Christmas. But I’m confident enough to say, I have done it, I’ve found the PERFECT Christmas Red lip shade!
I have 5 options altogether, but have been tossing between the Elizabeth Arden, Ceramide Ultra lipstick in Rouge and Rimmel London, Lasting Perfection in 01 for the longest time. Red lips are always bold, but do you go dark or light? At Christmas time, I prefer rich red shades rather than pinkier, lighter tones but something too dark is a little dreary for such a fun, happy holiday! It was a tough decision, but one cold, November morning my Ltd. edition NARS Glossybox turned up and the decision was made.
‘Cruella’ from Nars, although not a lipstick, is – in my eyes – the perfect red shade for Christmas. It’s darker than all but one of my runners up, but not so much that it’s too vampy. It kind of reminds me of the colour of Santa’s hat actually. It’s rich and warm and, well Christmassy. I actually really love the fact that’s it’s an almost matte consistency. It’s going to stay put like a matte shade would, so no need to worry when you’re nibbling on the mince pies and twiglets. But it’s got a slight sheen, sparkle to it too which is perfect for the festive season!
I was given ‘Rouge’ by Elizabeth Arden as a hand-me-down from my Mum in the summer and I honestly don’t know why anyone would want to part with this beauty. The formula is by far the best of any lipstick I’ve ever tried, it applies super smooth and even which is something I struggle with, even with my MAC lipsticks. ‘Rouge’ is a fairly light red but it’s really versatile, if you’re someone who’s looking to invest in a lipstick that will work for multiple occasions then I think this is the one. I wore it a lot in the summer because it’s bright but it’ll be beautiful this Christmas paired with a fancy frock.
’01’ from Kate Moss’ Lasting Perfection range from Rimmel is one of my favourite shades in the winter. It’s a bold statement to any makeup look, rich and dark like the Chocolate you’re inevitably going to be eating a lot of on Christmas day, so why not get your lipstick to match! Realistically though, darker red shades will go with almost anything, so if you’re still not sure what to wear then make this the one thing you are certain on.
‘Ruby Woo’ by MAC, although was never going to make it as number one, I think is a great alternative for someone who’s not going to have much time to touch up throughout the day. If you’re doing the turkey then chances are, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in the kitchen and not a thought will go into the state of your lippy. This is where the retro matte shades by MAC will save the day. I picked up this shade for my 22nd birthday, applied it at 11am and it was still going strong by 9pm. This lipstick is honestly going nowhere!
If you’re looking for something a little more budget-friendly then you should check out your local No7 counter. ‘Brick Red’ is part of their stay perfect range and I actually got this shade matched for my skin tone in store, which is great if you’re a little unsure on what suits you. It’s bright, similar to the Elizabeth Arden shade but not quite a bold, maybe just slightly pinkier too. It also applies the most precisely out of all the lipsticks I’ve mentioned, meaning you’re not necessarily going to need a lip pencil to complete yout look!
So, Cruella by NARS one the race for best Christmas red lip shade this year, but the Elizabeth Arden one comes in as a close second. I’d be interested to know if there are any shades I missed out that you think I should have added to the bill. It’s such a tough call. What do you think?
